AFTER a year spent working a strong, young all-rounder into its blueprint to win back the Ashes, Australia yesterday was forced to turn to plan B by adding specialist batsman Michael Clarke to its squad for the first Test when scans confirmed a strain in Shane Watson’s hamstring.
As mentioned in the article, the Aussie’s will go back to the traditional 6 batters, a keeper, 3 Quicks and Warney! The choice of 3rd quick takes another couple of twists. Will Stuart Clarke’s chances of being included in the side be enhanced by the fact that the Aussie’s will be one bowler down (although M Clarke does have some form with the ball, although spinning rather then pace).
Shaun Tait did his chances no harm in taking 3 – 65 in just under 20 overs but unfortunately did his chances a lot of harm by suffering bad cramp. As mentioned above, the Aussies can’t afford any of their bowlers to break down (more so with no Watson) and there already must be a small question mark on Glenn McGarth having not played a test in 10 months.
I think a lot of Aussies where extremely confident after the PMs XI game in Canberra but since then England have been solid and now we know this is Definitely On!
