Martyn calls it a day

England may have questionable Cricketers but there press can’t be beaten!!!

Damien Martyn, who was often unpredictable with the bat, has made a surprising call by announcing his retirement from both international and domestic cricket. Martyn’s place was under heavy scrutiny after the second Test in Adelaide, but he took control of his future by informing Cricket Australia of his decision today with immediate effect.

Martyn really got the best out of himself. He finished his career with an average of over 45 in tests and 40 in One Day cricket. His position was in doubt for the next test although it was thought that he would hold his spot with Shane Watson unlikely to be fit in time for the 3rd Test. 

Being a Victorian, he got a lot of heat over the last few years from the Vics looking to try and pump up Brad Hodge and get him into the squad.

Will be interesting to see who is brought in to replace him. A few from left field would Cameron White from Victoria to bat 6 or 7 and bowl leg spin, Phil Jacques to come in down the order. He has done it before. I believe Hodge is injured or else his name would be mentioned.

So best of luck to Damien and lets hope he gets as much out the rest of his life as he has out of his cricket life.

Boony thinks Beefy has a nice tash and Beefy thinks Boony is the master! Perhaps with the game sliding into a draw the heat between Boony and Beefy is reducing.

Match Update: Yes, Got him! Strauss gone for 34 to what CricInfo described as a questionable catch to Hussey off the bowling of a very dangerous Warne! 2 – 70 and Collingwood comes to the wicket to face a fired up Warne!

Match Update: 4 days of hard work, could it be out the window? Bell run out for 26 and now Collingwood and Pietersen at the wicket with Warne apparently tuning it a mile! England are 3 for 70 (net 108). This could be fun! (Hey CricInfo, where is my Wicket Alert?)

Match Update: To quote the CricInfo guys: “Oh Dear”. The king is dead, long live the King! Read it and weep:

I guess that makes it 1 all for this test match in the Warne v Pietersen battle.

Match Update: Flintoff Gawn!!!!!! Caught Gilly off of Lee! Maybe they won’t need McGrath! 5 – 77. I guess Jones has got the situation he prefers! (Press Play on the Player Below for interview. His comment near the end (last 15 seconds)):

Match Update:  5 – 89 at Lunch. Hope the English don’t CHOKE on their Cucumber Sandwiches! Warne to continue after lunch and as yet, no McGrath!!!

On another note, one day after Kim got the ass and Kevin moved in, Boony is making his own bid for PM!

Beefy thought that one went through them like a late night Curry. Ummmmm, Curry!!!

Match Update: Jones Gonesky! Caught by Hayden off Lee! Who is gaining the confidence here? Warne still seems to be unplayable and now Giles is in. My prediction, English press go Jones about his batting (wonder if he still prefers 5/57 or 5/457?).  6 – 95.

Match Update: QUACK, QUACK, QUACK. Giles gone for a duck! Caught Hayden bowled Warne! 3 more wickets to go and then the Aussies would have a nasty little chase of about 150 odd. This game isn’t over yet for either team. As my dear old mother always says. If one team goes (out) quick, the other can go out just as quickly!

I guess the Aussies worked out how to stop Collingwood. Get the rest of the team out at the other end! Warne 3 – 36 by the way!

Match Update: Warnie, Warnie, Warnie. Another Wicket. Hoggard Bowled for 4. England 8 – 105. Collingwood 11. Here come the Ferrets (they come after the Bunny’s you see!). You know your in trouble when Warny starts getting you with the Wrong’en/Googly

Match Update: McGrath cleans up the tail and the Aussies chase 168 (sorry for the delay, had a meeting). Currently the Aussies are 2 for 43 with Ponting and Hussey in. Need to score a further 125 off the last 28 overs at a rate of 4.46 with no Fielding restrictions and a wearing pitch. This is a one day match from here kids. They play until the game is over, no 6:30 cut off. Wonder if Eddie is going to the news early today? Me bets not!

Match Update: 100 needed off 23 overs 8 wickets in hand at a rate of about 4.35 an over.

Match Update: 94 needed off 22 overs 8 wickets in hand at a rate of about 4.28 an over

Dam!! Boony said something about getting something for the trouble and strife in yellow but I missed it and wasn’t recording it! D’oh! (sure Boony would tell me to stop whinging you whacker)

Match Update: 84 needed off 20 overs 8 wickets in hand at a rate of about 4.2 an over

Match update: Ponting out for 49. Caught Strauss bowled Giles. 3 -116. 52 off about 14 overs at about 3.5 overs. Martyn in and off the mark with a 1.

Match Update: Here is the last roll of the dice. Flintoff into the attack after a short period off the ground (maybe a little jabby, jabby with the Elephant juice).

Match Update: Martyn welcomes him with a 4 and then is out caught at slip. Surely Clarke in next to see us home. 4 – 121. 47 to get with 6 wickets left. Is there another twist in this game yet? Oh, dear. Any one watching this on TV? Is it still on?

Match Update:  36 needed off 11 overs 6 wickets in hand at a rate of about  3.3 an over. Just when you thought Freddie had bowled a maiden, Clarke hits a 3 and Pietersen gives him a bonus 4 over throws with what the ABC are describing as a silly throw!

Match Update: 31 needed off 9 overs 6 wickets in hand at a rate of about 3.45 an over

Match Update: 17 needed off 7 overs 6 wickets in hand at a rate of about 2.6 an over. Mr Cricket, Mike Hussey brings up 50 and if he can remain not out his average will stay above 80! Freak!

Match Update: 11 needed off 6 overs 6 wickets. Is that a Fat lady I am seeing stepping up on the stage?

Match Update: 8 needed off 4 overs 6 wickets. Losing the streaming now. Think the English have finally brought the field in!

THE AUSSIES WIN THE UNWINABLE!!!!!!!!!!

I said after the last test that the Ashes weren’t over yet, but they are extremely close now. Having said that, look at this game and I am waiting for another win or 2 draws before I start to celebrate the Ashes!

Boony and Beefy have already started the day.

The customary start of Boony asking Beefy for a beer because the cricket was starting was quickly followed by Boony asking for the Ashes back now.

Boony asked for Beefy’s opinion and Beefy thinks that its Rubbish. Should I assume this is a comment about Ashley Giles who I notice entered the attach at the same time?

Match update: Aussies 12 runs off avoiding the follow-on. Okay, make that 4 with Gilly hitting 2 fours of Harmison. Gilchrist 36, Clarke 41.

Match Update: Gilly reaches his 50. Clarke 43. Aussies past the follow-on and on their way to England’s first innings score. If Gilly and Clarke can stay in a few more hours, this game could get really interesting!

Match Update: Gilly out for 64. A wicket for Giles (caught on the Fence mind you). Clarke on 50. The two of them put on 98 in reasonably quick time. Warne in and the Aussies on 384. Would love to see them get a bit of a lead and put the pressure back on the POMs. (Boony and Beefy quite at the moment)

Match Update: At Lunch, Aussies 6-417. Trailing by 134. Warne 12 and M.Clarke on 68. Should be an interesting Middle session. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Aussies take a few extra risks to try to force a game out of this. Apparently there is a heap of chatter going on out in the center. Perhaps that will firer up the Aussies

Boony seems like he is going back to the Staple of Nachos while Beefy is after some scones.

Match Update: Since lunch the score has moved on to 441 with no wicket loss. Warne 23, Clarke 80.

Boony thinks that the England cricketers are in trouble, so God save the queen!

Boony wants a beer and wants me to get Beefy’s out of the oven for him.

Match Update: The lead is back to double Digits. You would have to think that Australia are batting England out of the game and in fact becoming the only team that could win the game! Why do I say that? Arguably Warnie is the only one that looks like being able to run through a side! He is on 25 with the Bat and Clarke is in the nervous 90’s. Scoring has slowed down considerably.

Match Update: Clarke brings up the ton. Hes 100 off 183 balls. Warne 31 and the score on 469. Trailing by 82 runs.

Boony want a beer but Beefy thinks he will drop it. Have any of you noticed that the dolls have Boony asking for the beer and Beefy saying you’ll drop it but the ads on websites (like the one in this post) have Beefy asking for the beer and Boony saying he’ll drop it? A mistake possibly? Donnie, do you know? I am officially freaked out. As I am writing this and clicking on the ad in the post to make sure that I am right, Boony asks for a beer and Beefy says he’ll drop it. I don’t know if I will feel safe with these guys in my home tonight!

Match Update: Warne out and that’s tea. He made 43 and put on 118 with Clarke (121). The Aussies trail by 43 and unless one of the Aussie bowlers can pull a rabbit out of the hat, you have to believe a draw is on the cards. The English Press have been having a field day predicting the end of McGrath and Warne (at least Pietersen and their batters domination of him). This might be the extra motivation those two champions need to roll through the English Line up.

Match Update: Hoggard has just got his 7th Wicket and is swinging it (from reading the CricInfo feed). What’s that he is sucking on? (just kidding, I think). 9 – 507. Would think Lee has to throw the bat now, although McGrath could stay around a while.

Match Update: The Aussies are all out. 513. McGrath made 1 and Lee was not out 7. The English have a lead of 38. With about 110 overs to go, hard to see where the result will come from unless Warne can spin the English out in a big hurry. I think this will come down to practice time in the middle and momentum/pride for the rest of the series.

And to make matters worst for the Aussies, Boony has just got his Box caught in his undies!

Beefy must be completely bored with the cricket, he is after a game of darts!

Match Update: Clark has the first scalp and its Cook for 9. 1-31 (or net 69). Warne bowled a good first over as well. This is an important wicket as the Aussies wouldn’t want to give the English openers even a sniff of getting back into any sort of form. Make the POMs sweat on their openers and then work on the middle order! Result still a chance but its a long shot now. You would have to believe that the Aussies are the only chance from here!

Match Update: At the close of play the game is headed for a draw unless an Australian Bowler can catch fire and roll the Poms. 1-59 with Strauss 31 and Bell 18. It would be great to get rid of Strauss for not many, he has the ability to get a lot of runs.

England dug deep today, deep into their reserves of determination, but even deeper into the Australians’ psyche. In compiling their magnificent 310-run stand for the fourth wicket, Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen touched statistical heights not seen in English Ashes campaigns since the days of Hobbs and Rhodes, and Hutton and Leyland, but more importantly, they ground two Australian champions into the South Australia dust.

They still need to get a further 19 wickets and in my opinion, they need to get the next 9 before a further 330 odd runs are scored with they want to level the ashes. Australia’s chances of winning are shot (perhaps if they could put on 650 in the next two days, could make a neverous last day if the pitch crumbles, but this is a Million plus to one shot) but they can grab back some of the momentum by batting the English into the ground and make them question if they can in fact bowl us out.

The other big news of the day is that (if you listen to the English press) Warne and McGrath are finished. McGrath for the first time (I believe) had figures of 0-100+ and Warne gave away the most runs in an innings he ever has.

Equally concerning is the tactics that Warne used against Pietersen. Bowling into the rough outside of the leg stumps forcing Pietersen to just use his pads. You can argue (as Aussie Coach, John Buchanan did) that it was an attacking move and on other wickets that provided more turn it might have been (just ask Mike Gatting). But there is no doubt that Pietersen is playing Warne well and that the Aussies decided in this game that the best form of Attack was to defend and force England to make the running and force them to try and win the game. The way the Aussies played they decide that after losing the toss, its better to take a draw then fight and lose.

So day three could be a ripper with Ponting in, Hayden still in and looking for a big score. Mr Cricket, Michael Hussey would love to pad out his average with another big hundred and Gilly would love to get amongst the runs and put that doubt in the mind of the English. At present they would think that they have his measure.

All congratulations has to Go to Paul Collingwood and Pietersen for a fine display of batting.

Boony: Put the VB’s on ice, the Crickets on the Tele! (or listen to the saying here by pressing play) 

Beefy wants his beers warmed up as the Cricket is on the tele (missed recording it though, doh).

One of my Boony must realize that the Aussies are struggling to get a wicket and is trying to intimidate Beefy with a little bit of “Fe Fi Fo Fum” action!

Its late, the Aussies had a pretty bad day and I am listening to some of the Ashes Podcasts that are around and also checking my recordings of Boony and Beefy. So here is the list of the sayings I found.

Warne fired back at England coach Duncan Fletcher, claiming Fletcher was trying to prop up fragile egos with his provocative comments that the tourists had played the master leg-spinner “very, very well and positively” during their 277-run pounding in Brisbane.

This brings back memories of the 5th ad in the Big Warnie campaign, that has an Englishmen (I am not sure I am allowed to say POM any more, more of that later) complaining about the big Warnie being left where it was. After the catch cry, “It’s Definitely On!!!” They come back to the lead Aussie saying “Your just frighten of his Flipper”.

Seems that they are. Worst news is that Warne and his mentor Terry Jenner have been working on his drift. To me, this is the sign that Warnie is at his best when he has the ball drifting into the batsman and then spinning away. When that happens, he is unplayable.

Toss will be soon and all important (although both sides have only one specialist spinner).

Flintoff has won the toss and will bat. Apparently he didn’t even give a Toss interview. THIS IS DEFINITELY ON!
